RELIGIOUS travel

The Orthodox faith is an important aspect of Greek culture since Saint Paul preached to the Greeks in 49 AD. All 27 books of the Christian New Testament are widely agreed to have originally been written in Greek and according to the archaeology of the Bible, divine inspiration was born in many sites throughout Greece and same divine inspiration accompanied Apostle Paul who was inpsired to pen his famous “Letter to the Corinthians”, one of the most beautiful texts to be written on brotherly love.

During several occupations, the Church contributed to preserving the language, culture and faith thereby maintaining the distinct Greek identity

Two significant religious destinations in Greece are, Meteora in Thessaly, Central Greece and Aghio Oros (Mount Athos) in Chalkidiki however, at all Greek Islands and the Mainland you’ll see churches and monasteries mainly from the Byzantine era with some even older and all of which are incredible places of great interest not only for the Orthodox but, for all people of religious beliefs

The Jewish presence in Greece dates back to the 6th century BCE, when the first Jews known as Romaniotes, considered among the oldest Jewish communities came to settle in the Greek territory after the destruction of Solomon’s Temple. In their long history they withstood the rise and fall of many empires and thrived in their Greek homeland.

From 150.000 Romaniote Jews that lived in Greece, today the population stands at around 4,500 spread over Athens, Thessaloniki, Corfu, Chalkis, Ioannina, Larissa, Rhodes, Trikala and Volos.

A Jewish traveller today can visit well preserved majestic Synagogues that testify the glory of the past and Monuments in Memory of Jews who lost their lives in the Holocaust
